Improvements at Township

Since the election in April, 2009 and the new elected officials took office in May changes to the township have been made to help improve services in several areas.

In July, 2009, the Supervisor and a trustee spoke with Loaves & Fishes about using part of the building vacated when the Highway Department moved into their new facility for the food pantry.  The cost to bring the area up to the standards needed was also discussed.

In August, 2009, a wall was constructed in the building between the Supervisor’s Office and Assessor’s Office to help improve security.

Also in August, 2009, new locksets were installed on all interior and exterior doors to meet ADA requirements.

In September, 2009, a recycling company for township residents to drop off their newsprint and paper recyclables.  Recycling containers were also placed in the township office.  The profits from this program will benefit the youth program and senior services for Wheatland Township.

In November, 2009, a Thanksgiving Turkey drive was started to help provide for families in need who reside in the township.  Food was donated by township employees and area residents which enabled us to feed 18 families not just a Thanksgiving Dinner but to help feed them for about a week.

In December, 2009, the township was a participating agency with the Will County Toys For Tots program.  Additional donations were also collected to add to what was donated by the program.  There were 39 children from 19 families were enabled to have a Merrier Christmas.

In 2009, the General/Emergency Assistance programs have almost double from 2008.  Because of this, the Thanksgiving Turkey drive was added as a way of helping.

Also in December, 2009, the Township Board is looking into the cost of providing transportation for seniors and handicapped residents in Wheatland Township.  As of July, 2010 this project is still being discussed by the Township Board.   Please contact the Supervisor's Office in writing if this program would benefit you.

The Township is also going to be a drop off location to dispose of used batteries (auto, motorcycle, etc.).  Flashlight batteries and the like type batteries will not be accepted.

The Township has started a Backpack Program in 2010 to assist Wheatland Township Families (who meet certain guidelines) with backpacks and some school supplies.  Applications are being taken to prepare for distribution in August right before school begins for the 2010-11 school year.  Distribution of the backpacks and supplies is Tuesday, August 17th; Wednesday, August 18th and Thursday, August 19th.

The township is planning a Thanksgiving Food Drive and to participate with Toys For Tots again in 2010.  We will be extending an invitation to anyone who would like to donate non persible food items for the food drive.  Look for future updates to these programs on our website.  Go to "Community Services" on the upper right hand page of the website and click on the links on the left hand side.

The Township Board is looking to purchase a pre-existing building or build a new building for the Township Supervisor’s and Assessor’s Offices in the future.

The township employees are thinking of new ways of providing services for the township residents that will not increase their tax dollars.  Any Wheatland Township resident who has any ideas and/or suggestions of services they would like to see, please contact the Supervisor’s Office at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
