Senior Monthly Luncheons

Our monthly senior’s luncheon is held on the third Wednesday of each month, excluding January and February. This luncheon, which is sponsored by our Township, continues to be a special event for our seniors. Come join us each month and enjoy the good food (please bring a dish to pass), at the Wheatland Salem Church, 1852 West 95th Street at 12 noon.

We usually have two picnics during the year in early summer and fall. Picnics are held at the Wheatland Township Park. Each luncheon is an opportunity to meet new friends and to participate in a special activity such as crafts, bingo, and even a friendly game of euchre. Every December, we have a special Holiday luncheon. It features a White Elephant gift exchange, and is always well-attended by Wheatland Township Seniors.

As always, we would like to give a special “Thank You” to the staff and church members of Wheatland Salem Church for hosting and volunteering their time to make this a successful event.

Through Will County’s TRIAD program, Wheatland Township continues to address some of the issues that concern our senior population. Professionals from Law Enforcement and Fire Prevention have shared information with our seniors which we hope will keep them safe at home and when they are out and about.

This fall, I will be instructing AARP’s Driver Safety Program for seniors in Wheatland Township. This program is the nation’s first and largest classroom driver refresher course, which helps drivers refine existing skills and develop safe, defensive driving techniques. The defensive driving class is taught in two four-hour sessions. Both AARP members and non-members may take the course, and there are no tests. Upon successful completion of the course, graduates 55 and over may be eligible to receive a state-mandated multi-year discount on their auto insurance premium (consult your insurance agent for specifics). The eight-hour course costs $10 per person. Notice of the class dates, location, and how to register will appear in our local newspapers and on our website.
